Two matches, two low scores: Ex-RCB coach gives important suggestion to LSG captain Rishabh Pant

Sanjay Bangar suggests Rishabh Pant should open for LSG in IPL 2025.

Former cricketer Sanjay Bangar believes Rishabh Pant should open the batting for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL). Pant had a challenging start as LSG skipper, with his team suffering a narrow one-wicket loss to Delhi Capitals (DC) on March 24 at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam.

Pant endured a tough outing, getting dismissed for a six-ball duck by Kuldeep Yadav and missing a crucial stumping in the final over of LSG’s chase. In the second game against SRH, Pant scored 15 runs off 15 balls as Lucknow registered a five-wicket in Hyderabad. Bangar suggested that LSG should allow Pant to play freely at the top of the order. He also recommended strengthening the bowling attack by including Shamar Joseph in place of Aiden Markram.

“I’ve always felt that in the white-ball format, his best role is at the top of the order. He should open the innings. I would replace Markram with Shamar Joseph. The middle order will stay the same with the overseas players,” Bangar shared with the broadcasters.

“Rishabh Pant should be given more freedom. As a batter, he’s demonstrated his ability to perform against high-quality pace bowling in the longer format. Not only does he have a strong reputation against spin, but he’s also proven his worth against pace. It would be beneficial to use him at the top of the order,” Bangar commented.

Former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson also backed Pant.

“He is an exceptional player with a lot of experience. The IPL is a lengthy tournament, and players will always look to take the game forward,” Williamson said.

In T20s, Pant has scored 644 runs in 21 matches as an opener, averaging 32.20, with his highest score being an unbeaten 116 against Himachal in 2018.
