Chennai Super Kings were in complete control of the run chase when captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was in the middle. He scored an aggressive fifty against Mumbai Indians in Chepauk. He amassed 53 runs off 26 balls, packed with 6 fours and 3 sixes, and it looked like Chennai would reach the target of 156 in 15 overs. However, the right-handed batter went for a glory shot against Vignesh Puthur and was caught by Will Jacks.
His departure allowed the MI to stage a comeback in the match, with CSK losing wickets. It came down to a special innings by Rachin Ravindra to close the game in Chennai’s favor in 19.1 overs.
Navjot Sing Sidhu criticized Gaikwad for his rash shots and accused him of putting the team under pressure. “Ruturaj Gaikwad shouldn’t have played that shot. He had things under control, and taking singles was a better option. But he thought of finishing the game early and paid a heavy price,” Navjot Singh Sidhu said on Star Sports.
Suresh Raina, the leading run-scorer of CSK in IPL, didn’t like the approach of his former franchise. “CSK took the run-chase lightly. The match shouldn’t have come to this point,” he said.
Noor Ahmad, the debutant, took four Mumbai Indians’ wickets and was named the Player of the Match. CSK signed him for INR 10 crore in the mega auction.
