Aakash Chopra has praised Shreyas Iyer as the best Indian batter against spinners after his stunning 97* off 42 balls, including five fours and nine sixes. Iyer guided Punjab Kings to 243/5, coming in after Prabhsimran Singh’s early dismissal. He took on top spinner Rashid Khan, hitting two sixes, and also dispatched R Sai Kishore for two maximums. Chopra was impressed by Iyer’s ability to dominate spinners in the middle overs, calling him the best Indian batter in that regard.
“It’s his clean and precise hitting, particularly against spinners, that stands out. I truly think he’s the best Indian batter in the middle overs when it comes to taking on spinners. While most batters need to step out to build momentum before hitting the ball over the top, Shreyas doesn’t need that. This unpredictability makes him tough for bowlers to read. It’s not just his front-foot play; he cleverly uses the depth of the crease to clear the mid-wicket fielder. One thing I’ve noticed is that he has slightly adjusted his stance,” Chopra commented on JioHotstar.
Additionally, New Zealand cricketer Kane Williamson, who is providing commentary during the ongoing IPL, also praised Iyer for his ability to evolve his game.

“What really stands out about Shreyas is his constant evolution. There was a time when teams tried to target him with short balls, but now he’s adapting superbly getting deeper in his crease, easing off his front leg, and dominating the short-pitched deliveries. The most impressive thing is his ability to quickly shift his weight forward again, which makes it challenging for bowlers who try to mix up their lengths going short and then full. He’s now capable of accessing all parts of the ground, making him a very dangerous batter,” Williamson stated.
Iyer was named Player of the Match as Punjab won by 11 runs, starting their campaign with a victory. Gujarat, chasing 244, were restricted to 232/5, with Sai Sudharsan top-scoring with 74 off 41 balls. Punjab will aim to continue their winning momentum against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on 1st April in Lucknow.
